Kameo Quick Start Guide: Controls

Every Elemental form has its own special abilities. Master these abilities, and how to change shape quickly to combine the powers of Kameo's Elemental forms and crush your enemies.

Need a quick jump-start and a few tips for controlling Kameo?

Kameo boasts an in-game, context-sensitive menu that displays what every button does. This is important, because every Elemental Warrior has different abilities and you will need to change Elemental Warriors as you play through a level. Elemental Warriors can be assigned to the X, B, and Y buttons.

The upper right corner of the screen displays which Elemental Warriors are assigned to which buttons, with A always being assigned to Kameo’s Elf form. Look to the bottom of the screen to learn what abilities the Left and Right triggers do, as well as what the Left Trigger+Right Trigger combination does.

  • Left Thumbstick: Use the left thumbstick to control Kameo’s direction and movement. Click the left thumbstick to toggle the in-game mini-map when you’re exploring. A green dot on the mini-map marks the location of your next objective.

  • Right Thumbstick: The right thumbstick controls the angle of the camera. Clicking the right-thumbstick activates a first-person view, which is useful for examining your environment, especially if you’re trying to figure out where to go next or how to get there. Click the right thumbstick again to exit this mode.

  • D-pad: The D-pad can be used to scroll through conversations quickly, or as an alternate to the Left-thumbstick. Generally, you probably won’t use the D-pad very much, if at all, in the game.

  • Left Trigger: While in her natural (Elf) form, the left trigger activates Kameo’s Hover mode. Otherwise, the left trigger’s function depends on what Elemental Warrior you are using, but it generally activates some sort of attack.

  • Right Trigger: While in her natural (Elf) form, pulling the right trigger makes Kameo jump. Like the left trigger, its function otherwise depends on which Elemental Warrior form you’re using.

  • Left Trigger+Right Trigger: While in Kameo’s natural form, pressing the left trigger and right trigger together activates a flip kick. Otherwise, the function depends on which Elemental Warrior you’re playing. Generally, the left and right triggers will activate an Elemental Warrior’s special attack.

  • A button: The A button has multiple functions. When Kameo is changed into another Elemental Warrior, the A button transforms her back into her Elf form.  The A button is also used to interact with the rest of the world. Press the A button to speak with people, read signs, and manipulate or pick up items.

  • X button, Y button, B button: These buttons do not have a default function. Rather, you may assign each to a different Elemental Warrior.
       1) Press the Start button to open the Wotnot Book.
       2) Pull the right trigger to turn to the Elemental Warrior page.
       3) Use the left thumbstick to center the cursor over an Elemental Warrior.
       4) Press the X, Y, or B button to which you’d like that Elemental Warrior assigned.

  • Start Button: The Start button brings up the Wotnot Book, which you can use to get clues, upgrade Elemental Warriors, invoke the power of any Crystal Eyes you may have found, adjust game options, and more.

Advanced Tips

  • Jumping and Falling: Kameo can jump while she is hovering to reach areas otherwise a little too high for a standard jump. Also, pulling the right trigger repeatedly during a long fall can prevent Kameo from a harsh – or fatal – landing – as long as she doesn’t fall too far.

  • Hover+Jump Across Water: Hovering combined with rhythmic jumping is the fastest way to move across a body of water. Pull the Left trigger to hover, and pull the Right trigger repeatedly to make This is much faster than swimming, although the timing of this maneuver is a bit tricky.

  • Assign Warriors On the Fly: There is another way to assign the B, X, and Y buttons to Elemental Warriors without going to the Wotnot book. Press and hold the B, X, or Y button that you would like use for an Elemental Warrior form. Holding the button brings up the Elemental Warrior selection wheel. Move the left thumbstick to select the Elemental Warrior you want, then release the button. The selected Elemental Warrior will be assigned to the button that you pressed to bring up the selection wheel. This is easiest to do if Kameo is in Elf form because you can’t assign an Elemental Warrior to a button that’s being used. For example, if you assigned Chilla to the B button, and you’re in Chilla form, you can’t assign Ash to the B button—because the B button already being used for a form you’re in. You could assign Ash to the X or Y button, or you could press the A button to return to Elf form so all three buttons are available.
