Podcast & RSS FAQ

What is RSS?

RSS (Rich Site Summary or “Really Simple Syndication”) is a method of subscribing to news that interests you. Your subscription automatically delivers the latest news to your computer. When you connect to the internet, your RSS reader collects all your headlines into one place for you so you don’t have to go searching all over the web for them.

Many websites have added RSS capability to their sites, so that any updates will be announced to their subscribers. Wikipedia has much more information on RSS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_%28file_format%29.

How do I get RSS?

  1. You need RSS software, also called an RSS Reader. You can download RSS software free or for a fee on the web. Once you have the software and subscribe, you will be automatically notified when a new RSS feed becomes available. The notification and the news file arrive automatically at your computer via your RSS software. Look here for some options: http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=rss+readers.

  2. What RSS application should I use? You can choose from any number of acceptable software programs. Look here for some options: http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=rss+readers

  3. To subscribe to an RSS feed, you need to acquire the URL of the feed and input it into your RSS software. On our site, you do the following:
    1. Right click on the RSS link on the web page that interests you.
    2. Choose “Copy Shortcut.”
    3. Paste the link into your RSS software. Look to your application’s Help files to learn where to do this.

What is a PODCAST?

A podcast (also called a blogcast) is an audio file such as a recorded interview, discussion or report. Web publishers generally offer an ongoing series of podcasts, and you subscribe to be informed when a new one is available. It works similarly to a text RSS. A podcast is an audio file distributed via RSS. Wikipedia has much more information on podcasts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting.

How do I get podcasts?

  1. You need podcast software. You can use either podcast-specific software or a regular RSS application.

    1. Podcast-specific software: There are some applications designed specifically for podcasts, called podcatchers. You can download podcast software free or for a fee on the web. Once you have the software, you subscribe to be automatically notified when a new podcast is available from their creators. The notification (and the file) arrive automatically at your computer via your podcast software. Look here for some options: http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=podcast+client. (iTunes supports podcasts as well.)

    2. RSS applications: Most RSS clients, such as FeedDemon, also feed podcasts. Look here for some options: http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=rss+readers.

  2. To subscribe to a podcast, you need to acquire the URL of the feed and input it into your RSS software. On our site, you do the following:
    1. Open your podcast reader software.
    2. Regardless of which reader you have, find the location where you subscribe to a podcast. When you choose to subscribe to a new podcast feed, a dialog requiring a URL displays.
    3. Return to the Kameo website, right-click the podcast icon, and select Copy Shortcut. This places the URL for the podcast feed into temporary memory.
    4. Return to the URL dialog in your podcast reader and paste in the URL that was stored in memory.
    5. Click OK to close the dialog and accept the change. You are now subscribed to the Kameo podcasts and your reader software will automatically download new chapters as they become available.
